That’s a very good question.   

Hello, my name is David Perry and I know a thing or two about job search success.  I wrote the book – literally – which has changed job hunting for hundreds of thousands of people in a very positive way.  The Wall Street Journal nicknamed me “The Rogue Recruiter” after writing my second book, Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters (GM4JH).  The Wall Street Journal article landed me in the May 2009 cover story of Fortune magazine.

I ‘fell’ into writing books when my best friend Kevin Watson lost his job. My first book, Career Guide for the High Tech Professional: Where the Jobs are Now and How to Land Them (Career Press, 2004), was written– after I helped Kevin land a job when the technology industry tanked.  Career Guide was endorsed by Stephan Covey, Guy Kawasaki and Seth GodinJay Conrad Levinson wrote the book’s Foreword and this resulted in my being asked to write Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters (Wiley 2005) with Jay.  Numerous paid speaking gigs around the world quickly followed.

But it wasn’t all roses.

Easter Friday 2008 I suffered a massive stroke which left me unable to walk, talk, read or write.  Just when Kevin needed to find a new job.  Luckily for him, my speech started coming back on Day 5 and we struck a deal to fix our situations.   Kevin would sneak back in to the hospital after visiting hours so I could prep him for interviews.  This forced me to exercise my brain which accelerated re-learning how to speak and eventually to read and write.  A fortunate coincidence.  

So you might be wondering how many interviews Kevin got in a town with 65% unemployment? More than he could juggle:  Kevin landed 35 initial interviews, 28 call backs and 24 offers in an less than seven weeks.  Getting interviews and offers turned out to not be a problem for Kevin because he was pioneering some new guerrilla tactics I had developed in my lab…  No, getting the offers wasn’t the issue. 

Keeping track of all his activities, the interviews and the copious notes he was keeping on the questions he was asking – that was the issue.  In fact it was a mini nightmare.  So, to bring some order to all of this chaos Kevin created a very simple contact management system to track the jobs he was interviewing for, as well as which resume and cover letter he had used, and when to follow up for each one.

That simple program was the start of the MyNewJobHunt platform.  But it would be Kevin’s brother Dave Watson who would go on to develop the core platform for MyNewJobHunt a few weeks short of the five year anniversary of Kevin’s sudden passing and the complete loss of all the passwords needed to access the program.

What were the most successful job hunters doing?

I needed to know more.

Lucky for me, one of the side benefits of being a published author (with a large New York publisher) is that people love to ask me questions.  And it’s well known that I love talking… even more so following my recovery.

I also love to learn.  By 2006 I had 56,000+ direct connections on LinkedIn.  Mostly these where readers of Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters.   So, I took the initiative to reach out to about 3000 of them.

What I discovered was amazing:

  1. They did NOT simply post their resumes online, if at all. (like everyone else did)
  2. They rarely used the job boards (monster, dice, LinkedIn, etc.)
  3. They looked for jobs differently.  (actually, they didn’t look for jobs)
  4. They interviewed differently.  (more like auditioned)
  5. Their processes were different. (they attracted unsolicited offers)

It was easy to conclude, that compared to 97% of job hunters, the successful ones did almost everything differently. They had become true guerrilla marketers in  their careers.

Their success rate?

Well that was different too.  

They were astonishingly successful.  Over 70% of them got a job within their first two times approaching an employer directly using a combination of tools and techniques I first outlined.

This was shocking.  Even for us recruiting veterans!

But it wasn’t magic.  They simply knew how to leverage these modern job search strategies to effectively demonstrate what recruiters and hiring managers wanted.  They landed in jobs they actually wanted to do and negotiated better compensation.  They effectively managed their job search.

What can you learn from their success?

Career experts today admit success in the job market today depends…

These career experts have discovered another key fact: it is not who you know that matters—it’s who knows you. We couldn’t agree more. And successful job hunters today are proving it.

To illustrate our point, imaging someone famous. Let’s use Tom Hanks for example.  Somebody famous like Tom Hanks probably knows a lot of people.  Maybe he knows 2,000 people by name and face.  That’s a lot of people to truly know.  But think of how many people know who Tom Hanks is across the world.

10 million? 100 million? Maybe more?  

The “awareness quotient” is clearly in his favor.  From a career perspective, you need to get people to know who you are, to build your own awareness quotient, in order to be successful in the job market today.

Now—and this is important—if you had the knowledge to quickly make a few minor career search adjustments, with things you are probably already are doing each day, that would get you exposed to the right people in the next 30 days, and you could get known by people that need your skills, in your industry and would pay a premium for your services, you could avoid doing what “everyone else” is doing in the job market and bypass your way to the top jobs and offers.

If you don’t have this knowledge…if you do not make these adjustments to your job search strategy, then you will remain in an extremely weak career position…you will continue applying for the same jobs on the same job boards with little to no success the same way most people do today.  It’s as simple as that. 

To use an analogy, you pay a mechanic—not for his work—but for his knowledge. If you had that knowledge yourself—then you would not have to pay him at all.

This is about controlling your life, so you can live the life you want, on purpose and with purpose.  Wouldn’t you rather fulfill your purpose than exist in an 8×8 cubicle slaving away at someone else’s idea of a job.
